Conor McGregor, the UFC’s biggest winner in its history, has been a standout figure for many. He has brought an unprecedented mass following to the fight industry with his unique personality and charisma. As a result of his success, some are questioning if he’ll be able to maintain that level of talent as he ages.

McDonagh spoke to RTÉ Sport about writing the documentary, his thoughts on McGregor’s current state, and how he plans to deal with UFC 229 aftermath.

“There was a lot of behind-the-scenes footage that I got access to that wasn’t used in the main event, so it was interesting getting to see that stuff. It’ll be interesting seeing how people react to it when it comes out because some of it isn’t what they were expecting. I think people will be surprised at how much story there is to tell in relation to this fight and the build-up to it.”

McDonagh also touched on McGregor’s future in MMA and whether or not he will ever fight again. He doesn’t seem too sure about it, but he does want to finish off his documentary before making any decisions about his future.

He is a two-time UFC world champion and widely regarded as one of the best fighters in the world. McGregor’s early life was tough. He was born into a family of ten children in Crumsick, Ireland, and his parents were both alcoholics. McGregor began his UFC career as “The Notorious” Conor McGregor. Winning eight straight fights before he faced Nate Diaz in 2016. Diaz was a veteran fighter and McGregor had never finished someone in the UFC before. The fight went to the judges, who awarded McGregor with a majority decision victory.

After that win, McGregor became one of the most wanted fighters in the world. He signed a contract with boxing giant Floyd Mayweather Jr., but ultimately decided against it. He then signed with Khabib Nurmagomedov, who was just starting out in MMA.

Nurmagomedov has an undefeated record in MMA, with 27 wins by submission and six by knockout. His last fight was against Tony Ferguson, who is considered one of the best fighters in the UFC. Nurmagomedov won by decision and many people believe that Ferguson was lucky to not lose that fight.

Khabib Nurmagomedov is a 25-year-old Russian born in Dagestan, who first came to prominence as a lightweight contender. After winning the IBF Lightweight Championship in April 2014. Nurmagomedov successfully defended his title against Rafael Dos Anjos before moving up to the UFC’s Welterweight division. In his debut UFC fight, Nurmagomedov defeated American Donald Cerrone via TKO in the fourth round. He followed this up with an emphatic victory over Irishman Robbie Lawler. Submitting him in the fourth round with a rear naked choke. In October of 2016 Nurmagomedov was charged with disorderly conduct and assault after an attack on a bus in Brooklyn, New York. The charges were later dropped due to a lack of evidence.

Nate Diaz is a 29-year-old American fighter who has been competing in the UFC since 2005. He is best known for his twelve-round battle with Conor McGregor which was dubbed “The Notorious”. Diaz won the fight by majority decision. But was subsequently stripped of his UFC Welterweight Championship for failing to defend it against McGregor in March of 2016.
