Materials You’ll Need
If you’re interested in sewing your own flaggele, the supplies you’ll need are: a fabric of your choosing, a package of Velcro, and a sewing machine. The size of your flaggele will determine the amount of fabric you’ll need. For example, if you want a small flaggele that measures 4×6 inches, you’ll need about 2 yards of fabric.
Once you’ve gathered your supplies, it’s time to start sewing! Begin by cutting out the desired shape from the fabric. You can use any measurements that guide your decision- making process, but remember that the larger the flaggele, the more Fabric Area it will require.
Now it’s time to sew up the sides and bottom of your flaggele. Use a few inches of overlap at each seam so that when finished it will be one continuous piece. Do not skip this step- skipped seams will create bulky flags!
Once all sides and bottom seams have been sewn together, it’s time to turn your flaggele right side out and topstitch along the edges. This will help keep it in place while wearing and avoid any fraying or weakening of the fabric over time (or during heavy use).
Construction Steps
To make your own flaggle, you’ll need some supplies and a bit of know-how. Here’s what you’ll need:
-Ruler or a straight edge
-Plywood or cardboard
-Utility knife
-Circular saw
-Stiles or other sturdy objects to hoist the flag on (optional)
1. Cut your plywood or cardboard to the desired size. Make sure it’s at least twice as wide as it is tall. The taller your flagpole, the better!
2. Draw a grid on your plywood or cardboard using a ruler or straightedge. This will help in designing the shape of your flaggle later on.
3. Use the utility knife to cut out the shape of your flaggle. Try not to cut all the way through, just enough so that it can be stitched together later on (see tutorial below).
4. Assemble your flaggle by sewing it together using a seam allowance of 1/8″. You can choose to use a decorative stitch such as American Flag, Starburst, Cross Stitch, etc., but remember to leave an opening for hanging!
5. If you’d like to add extra stability to your flaggle, use sturdy objects such as stiles (found at home centers) and attach them near either end of the flagpole using metal bolts and washers (provided).
Tips for Making a Flaggle That Looks Great!
There are a few things to keep in mind when creating your own flaggle:
1. Make sure the flag is large enough to be easily seen from a distance.
2. Use brightly colored materials for the flagstaff and wrap them around twice with sturdy twine or cord for extra strength.
3. If you’re making a flag with an image or text on it, be sure to print it out or have a digital copy ready to go before you start assembling your flaggle. You’ll want to make sure the colors are accurate and that all of the details are correct before displaying your work of art!
